Crossing Borders: An Intercultural Engagement
Argentina · Uruguay · Nepal · India · Great Britain · USA Inspired by ongoing relationships with international artists and theatres, and the excitement generated at small international performance festivals, Pilgrim Theatre brings to Boston a month-long series of unique artistic visions and voices, with a range of provocative work referencing the globe. · · · · · Argentinian actor and musician, Perlo Logarzo, feels the immensity of the Rio de la Plata – the river which is the border between Argentina and Uruguay - running in her veins in Hay Piedras enel Cielo y son para el Trueno (“There are Stones in Heaven for the Thunder”). Deborah Lake Fortson and her company, Tempest Productions, in collaboration with artist Myrna Block, confront the horrific nightmares of survivors of the sex trafficking trade in India and Nepal in Body and Sold: Part One. Sheryl Stoodley traverses the darker parts of our collective unconsciousness, as her company, Serious Play! Theatre Ensemble – this time, all young women – tackles the disturbing, provocative world of Caryl Churchill’s The Skriker. Molly Maxner and Kelly Parsley’s Chimaera Physical Theater passionately dance the course of a life in The Living Room, which was created as part of the first artistic collaboration between U.S. artists and an Islamic state dance company. Their performance is described by Jack Anderson of the NY Times as “dramatically intense, boisterously amusing, and alarming to behold.” Alejandro Balbis – murga master of Montevideo, Uruguay – offers a workshop in the vibrant rhythm and singing style of Carnival, Murga!. These artists come together under one roof when Pilgrim Theatre, one of the four Resident companies at Boston Center for the Arts, opens their latest project, Crossing Borders – an intercultural engagement, with performances, workshops and an exhibit, featuring a multicultural array of artists from the U.S.A. and abroad. Tickets for performances range from $12 to $15.
