Crossing Borders II: An Artistic Engagement
Restraints by Diane Edgecomb

"…jettisons traditional theatrical assumptions."

created and performed by Diane Edgecomb

an open rehearsal

March 4 - 5, 2005

“The inner landscape of the insane - intense and spiritually charged”

In this imagistic world, real and unreal reflections of the self pit themselves against the restraints of mind and matter in a desperate fight to be free. Amidst consuming fires of vision and false prophecy, the dance of longing begins. It threatens to destroy the magic mirror of the self in its effort to be united with the divine.

Armed only with a few simple props Edgecomb creates an unforgettable inner world riddled with despair, witchcraft and madness. Woven through with Shaker hymns, the ecstatic poems of Rumi and recollected dreams, Restraints boldly explores the boundaries of madness and religious zeal. What reins us in and what pulls us over the brink of reality...

Restraints was developed under the artistic care of Jola Cynkutis, who has an extensive pedagogical and performance background in the theatre practices of the Grotowski Theatre Lab. Restraints relies upon startling physical images and juxtapositions to develop its themes. Surreal vignettes thread a very human tale of hope and despair to its ultimate fateful end.
